Come baby come – the anti-graft body looks for a new boss

Kenya has sons and daughters with acumen to hold the office of Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. The big question is, who can really lead Kenya to effective fight against economic corruption? There is one Miguna Miguna, an international lawyer, business man and a publisher, as well as a known character in the Kenyan political landscape. Can Miguna Miguna make one successful boss of the bedevilled commission? This is a question worth 1 million dollars.
Miguna emerged as a big critique of Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Raila Odinga before and during the political campaign in 2012 to play down his bid for presidency. Whether he was a gun for hire or not does not matter here. His book “Peeling Back the Mask” attracted a lot of media attention for a very short time. At the launch of the book, his popular phrase – “come, Baby, come!!!” attracted the attention of the social media as well. But who is this personality in Kenya? Can Miguna be a successful Anti-Graft watchdog?
EACC is an organ charged with ethical audit as well. Whoever, vies for this position must be one who is not blamelish or some character that has colluded with corruption in any way. But most importantly, remember, the office also requires one to be well connected with political big wigs in Kenya. Furthermore, it is the Parliament to determine who is to hold this big office. Concerning Miguna, his legacy may not work well for this troubled office in the modern Kenya. Already his exposure of grand corruption published in a big volume for the world to read has not yielded much fruit in the fight against corruption. But it would be wrong to judge the book by its cover.
Prof. PLO Lumumba was considered one of the best anti-graft watchdog. The work he started built the confidence of many Kenyans. He is one of the most eloquent Kenyans, learned and well vast with international issues. He is a known figure, a professor, and a writer. His books are used by Kenyan intellectuals as point of reference. He has participated in great events that brought change to Kenya. He is a person of integrity and a listener to all. His fitness for the position could not be doubted after taking over the office from Justice Ringiera. PLO is a person with audacity and high intellectual capacity.
But, he was made persona non grata by the same political elites that had pushed him into this office. He tried to turn the unturnable stones during his time in office. The only thing was to make it all impossible for him. His last word when he was to quit the office was…”I am done!” A sign of giving up the fight. It was ugly and very discouraging for any right thinking Kenyan with courage to make corruption a thing of the past.
Learned friend Mr. Matemu was given the hot seat. But, what has become of him? He tried to step on the toes of the invincibles in corruption and he had to quit.
May be, Mr. Miguna can as well prove himself and show his might in a peculiar way. He can perhaps unmask the ugly face of corruption that sees Kenya losing billions of shillings, but will the Parliament see it this way? How he is likely to handle the job is out of question. If his open talk, courage and ruthlessness, can work for him, is still a question worth millions of dollars.
It all depends on what Kenyans are looking for. The success of the fight against corruption relies heavily on the heart of Kenyans as a people. If Kenyans are really for stamping out corruption and unethical behaviour in the public offices, then, whoever will be assigned the job will be successful. But, if Kenyans are not sincere in the fight against corruption, then, even an Angel from heaven will CERTAINLY find the seat too hot, and quit without looking back. It is like the Biblical story of Sodomo and Gomorrah… it will burn in the fire of sulphur!

  3. My thinking is whoever accents to that seat must embrace corruption lest he or she will be shown the door the next day. Corruption is so deep rooted in this country that no matter how committed an individual there lacks the political will to confront this evil.
